How Fast is a Jet Plane?

So how fast exactly is the speed of sound?

That’s another good question, and it depends almost entirely on the TEMPERATURE of the air.

At sea level (or ground level for those of you that do not live on a boat), the speed of sound is about 1236 kilometres per hour (768 mph).

Another way of saying this is that SOUND can travel:
1 kilometre in 3 seconds, or
1 mile in 5 seconds.
1 mile = 1.6 kilometres
Cool Science Fact…

Next time there is a thunderstorm count how many seconds after you see a lighting flash until you hear the thunder. If, say, this was 6 seconds you would know that the lightining bolt was 2 kilometres away.
